Chianti Classico Gran Selezione – Top of the Pyramid

The long-awaited Gran Selezione has recently come on the market. For those not already aware, Gran Selezione is the new, highest designation for wines from Chianti Classico. A quick look at the Consorzio’s published regulations reveals two main, additional requirements for Gran Selezione: Grapes must come exclusively from the given estate’s vineyards, and a level of quality must be attained relative to certain technical criteria (min. 30 months aging, no additives, min.13% alc/vol, min. acidity 4.5g/l, etc.). This latest development is part of a long process aimed at better delineating one of Italy’s largest appellations. Confusion surrounding Chianti and Chianti Classico still persists, making it difficult both for producers to set reasonable price points and consumers to buy the right wines. Gran Selezione tops the region’s two, already existing tiers, annate and riserva, and according to the Consorzio’s president, Sergio Zingarelli, represents “a new type of excellence to its qualitative pyramid.” James Suckling.

Rocca delle Macie Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva di Fizzano 2011 - $33.95 per bottle / six packs

Rated 93, James Suckling

“This is a tight and fruity Chianti Classico with dried cherry and walnut aromas and flavors. Some tile and spice too. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Give it a year to open up.”

Rated 92, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

“Powerful and brooding, with black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit shaded by tasty oak. Earth, mineral and spice flavors ride out through the lingering finish as the tannins build. Impressive, even though this doesn’t shout Chianti Classico. Best from 2018 through 2028.”

Rated 91, Michael Godel, WineAlign

“Certainly the most affordable Gran Selezione on the market, Rocca Delle Macie’s From Castellina in Chianti is remarkably defined and tannic. The (32nd) vintage prepares for another profitable possibility, with ripe fruit, solid structure and those formidable edges. The re-branded single- Fizaano vineyard Riserva to Grand Selezione is again worth every bit of that advantage. Big, balanced and in the end, still brooding, let this rest for another two years. Drink 2019-2026.”

Rocca delle Macie Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli 2011 $99.95 / three packs

Rated 95, James Suckling

“Very dried strawberry and light plum aromas with hints of roses. Full body, round and rich tannins and a beautiful texture. Excellent depth and length. A wine with so much to offer. Drink or hold.”
