The Good Juice
If like many people, you’ll be spending as much time as possible at the cottage this summer, you’ll be needing a good supply of wine, for yourself as well as the many invited and uninvited visitors that you’ll be entertaining.
The Good Juice this week contains a couple of whites that are pitch- perfect for lazy, hot summer days, two reds that will seriously over deliver when served with the accompanied recipe below and one Napa Valley blue-chip that would make THE best Father’s Day gift.

A rare double vintage offering of Montegiachi Chianti Classico Riserva 2005 and 2004
From what will go down as two of the best vintages of the decade, the 05 Chianti received the highest honour from the Italian wine bible Gamberro Rosso by scoring 3 glasses. The wine offers up perfectly ripe, red berry aromas alongside liquorice, fennel and black pepper.
The 04 also has its share of great reviews; This time from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, with a score of 91 and kudos for its tension, ripe raspberry, purity and harmony.
The Montegiachi estate has been growing Sangiovese alongside tranquil olive groves and lemon orchards since the 15th century.
2004 $25.95 / 2005 $26.95

Maverick Twins Shiraz 2007
Maverick is a start-up winery from the Barossa Valley with big ambitions. The wine leaps from the glass and almost slaps you on the back. Massive aromas of ripe black fruit, menthol, graphite, violets, spice and soy with a texture not unlike dense cream. The wine will age gracefully for a decade but also drinks like a dream now. “One of the best 10 new wineries in Australia” James Halliday’s Australian wine companion.
$28.95 6 pk

One for the cellar ...
2006 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Estate
Don’t count on drinking this for the cottage season. This Napa blueblood would be just what the doctor ordered for Father’s Day. It’ll cellar comfortably for 15 years and start drinking nicely in a couple. Here’s what Signor Parker had to say about the wine and one of Napa’s most historic estates:
“The 2006 estate cabernet is brilliant. It would probably be hard to find a Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality with this production level, all estate fruit, and such impeccable viticulture and winemaking. This wine reminded me of a great vintage of Pontet Canet in Pauillac, Bordeaux. The deep crème de cassis flavors intermixed with charcoal and lead pencil shavings soar from the glass. Its full body, stunning ripeness, sweet tannin, and substantial flavour authority make for a brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next two decades. Score 94 points “
