The Good Juice
For this edition of The Good Juice we have selected a winery from Washington State along with a winery located in the Hunter Valley Australia. Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards in Washington State was established in the early 80’s when Jeff Gordon, his wife and brother Bill planted some wine grapes on a sagebrush-covered slope overlooking the Snake River in southeastern Washington’s Columbia Valley. Bill retired 1998 however Jeff’s daughter and son-in-law joined the winery in 2001. Penmara Wines in the Hunter Valley, was created towards the end of 2000 when 5, well established, family owned vineyards joined forces so as to gain greater control over their winemaking and distribution activities. The synergies of this new venture have resulted in consistently higher quality wines which are sold both domestically and internationally. Both of these wineries are family run, though in the case of Penmara Wines it is, “ five families one vision”.

Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards, 2003 Syrah $ 31.95/bottle
2003 was an ideal growing season. Spring conditions led to an even bud break and the absence of rain made for a beautiful fruit set. Summer temperatures were above average and rainfall was below average, resulting in very even and predictable ripening. Very warm September temperatures led to full ripe flavors in the fruit.
The 2003 Estate Grown Syrah was harvested at 25.8 Brix - a measure of grape sugars - and gently crushed into open top stainless steel fermentation tanks. The skins and juice were allowed to “cold soak” for a number of days prior to the addition of cultured yeast. This process creates darker colors and enhances the ripeness of flavors. After fermentation was completed, the finished wine was drawn off and the skins were pressed. 100% of the vintage was aged in small oak barrels, the majority being from French forests, for 22 months. French oak is used to bring out the spice and dark chocolate flavours in the wine. Gentle racking of the barrels allowed for the removal of solids without filtration.
The 03’ Syrah shows great varietal expression laced with layers of rich cassis, dark chocolate and pepper. It is smooth on the palate with a long-lasting finish. A great glass of wine by itself, the 03’ Gordon Brothers Syrah can be paired with roasted lamb or spicy Asian cuisine. |

Penmara Wines, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve $ 19.95/bottle
This wine has been sourced from one of the family owned vineyards in Orange NSW. Orange is a relatively new viticultural region, but it has shown great promise in recent years. The property is situated approximately 950 metres above sea level and the cool growing climate contributes towards the complexity and elegance of the wines produced from the vineyards located there.
The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness and pressed for a cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then given some extended lees contact prior to filtration and bottling. The nose on the wine has lovely steely, elegant passionfruit characters with a little bit of grassiness. The palate is very fresh and crisp; however, it is open and approachable. Citrus and herbaceous characters fill out the flavour profile, with zesty acids adding length and character.
The freshness and acidity of this wine lends itself to seafood and summer salads. How about Risotto with Lemon Shrimp, Roasted Garlic and Goat Cheese! Make certain that you serve the wine well chilled. It is best consumed in its youth.
