Matariki Aurelio Erath
The Good Juice

In The Good Juice this week we have reviewed two wines from Matariki, a new winery for us, along with two additional reds. From Matariki we have selected the Aspire, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir Estate. We have paired the Sauvignon Blanc with scallop and pink grapefruit salad with almonds from Zucca Trattoria. The other reds are the 2000 Barolo Rocche from Aurelio Settimo and the 07’ Oregon Pinot Noir from Erath. Once again we will have these wines open and available for tasting from 9:00 am. to 4:30 pm. on Friday, June 5th. If you can please drop by our offices which are located at 156 Duncan Mill Road Unit 23, roughly a 5 minute drive from the intersection of Leslie Street and the 401. We would love to see you.
Matariki Sauvignon Matariki Wines, 2008 Aspire Sauvignon Blanc $18.95/bottle

Matariki wines are a testament to the belief that the great wines are made in the vineyard. The careful matching of soil and grape varieties, modern winemaking techniques and skilful blending has earned Matariki international acclaim. The Aspire series has been made with the same passion for excellence to introduce you to the Matariki family of wines. This Sauvignon is more akin in style to an elegant white Bordeaux than to the tropical fruit packed wines produced in Marlborough. It has a deliciously taut character with plenty of elderflower and gooseberry fruit and a mineral backbone that makes it ideal with foods such as oysters, white fish and goat’s cheese.

Pinot Noir Matariki Wines, 2007 Aspire Pinot Noir Estate $22.95/bottle

For the Pinot Noir, all of the different clones were hand picked separately and kept separate until blending. The grapes were gently destemmed into fermentation vessels. Fermentation was carried out in barriques and tank and the wine was matured in oak for 8 months prior to bottling. The Aspire Pinot Noir displays a vibrant bouquet of cherries and strawberries which rolls into a warm and generous fruit driven palate. Spice and earthy, savoury notes add complexity to this softly structured approachable Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir.

Zucca Trattoria…scallop and pink grapefruit salad with almonds
scallops, large size, very fresh, one per person
pink grapefruit
sliced blanched almonds, lightly toasted
belgium endive
sea salt
extra virgin olive oil

Method
Peel the grapefruit with a sharp knife, removing all of the white pith in the process. Cut out the segments and squeeze the juice from the remaining pulp into a flat dish. Slice the scallops into thin circles and marinate briefly in the grapefruit juice. Sprinkle with sea salt. Chop the endive cross-wise, discarding the core and arrange in one layer on flat salad plates. Lightly salt. Arrange the scallops over the endive. Add the remaining juice and the almonds. Dress with extra virgin olive oil.

Erath Erath, 2007 Oregon Pinot Noir $29.96/bottle

Dick Erath is one of the original wine pioneers of Oregon. His story alone could fill up a book - and in fact it does The Boys Up North - Dick Erath and the Early Oregon Winemakers by Paul Pintarich, published by The Wyatt Group. As a home winemaker in San Francisco, Dick first fell in love with Pinot Noir when he tasted some old French Burgundies. In the 1960s Dick traveled up and down the west coast in search of an ideal place to grow Pinot Noir. He was determined to make elegant, food friendly Pinot Noir and he finally found what he was looking for in 1967. Dick had chosen to grow grapes and make wine in the then unproven northern Willamette Valley of Oregon. Dick had made extensive studies of the soil and climate, and was convinced that this was the place where he could make his dream of world-class, affordable Pinot Noir a reality.

The Wine Spectator had the following to say about the 2007 Oregon Pinot Noir, “88 points and Top Value of 2008. Light and crisp, with currant and floral aromas and flavours that pick up a bit more steam as they develop in the mouth, lingering nicely.”
Aurelio Aurelio Settimo, 2000 Barolo Rocche $60.95/bottle

Aurelio Settimo’s vineyards and cellars are located in a hamlet of La Morra, called Frazione Annunziata, in the heart of the Barolo wine-growing area. Since 1962, this small, family-run farm has been selecting and vinifying grapes grown only on its own land, dedicating painstaking, constant care and commitment to its quest for wines of the highest quality. The estate vineyards cover a total area of 16.4 acres of which roughly 2.4 are planted with Dolcetto and 14 with Nebbiolo. The excellent south - south-westerly exposure of the Rocche slopes 8.4 acres, is considered as being one of the top growing areas for Barolo wine. Here, the fertile, clayey-calcareous soil, together with the altitude and exposure, produce a full-bodied, but, at the same time, delicate, very fragrant Barolo.

Here is what the Wine Spectator had to say about the 2000 Barolo Rocche in the July 31st, 2004 edition. “Fantastic aromas of plums, fresh flowers, licorice and tar follow through to a full-bodied palate and super silky tannins. This is tight but shows excellent potential. Best after 2008. 1,700 cases made." Score 92. –JS
