The Good Juice

This will be the last Good Juice before the cellar shuts down for a few weeks, so we’ve put our heads together to come up with 8 wines for $20 or less that any wine lover would be happy to find under the tree or to toast the new year with.

Pares Balta Cava, Penedes Spain $18.95

This is the house sparkler at Rodney’s Oyster Bar in Toronto, need I say more? The Cusine family of Pares Balta have been making wine since 1790, organic production before anyone knew what the word meant. Crisp, chalky intensity, green apple and pear flavours, generous texture and a complex character.

Cormons Prosecco, Friuli Italy $16.95

Profile’s biggest selling sparkler delivers tons of simple sparkling goodness. This stuff is mother’s milk to our Italian restaurants. Minerally fresh floral aromas, gentle and delicate bubbles pair perfectly with a festive gathering of friends.

Aspire Sauvignon Blanc, Hawkes Bay New Zealand 2008 $18.95

Fresh as a daisy Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. Expect spring time aromas of cut grass, asparagus and fresh green herbs. An easy going texture that will pair well with cheese boards, charcuterie and salads.

Aspire Pinot Noir, Hawkes Bay New Zealand 2007 $20.00

You could go through a bottle of this while you’re cooking the dinner. Pitch perfect Pinot texture, soft berries on the nose with subtle spice and oak flavours. A generous Pinot Noir...not an everyday thing!

Megalomaniac Riesling, Vineland Niagara 2007/2006 $17.95

Twelve bottles of local Riesling to keep your carbon footprint down this winter, six bottles each from the 06 and 07 vintage. Riesling is great choice for a well roasted turkey and as well for people looking for a touch of sweetness. This package gives you a rare chance to compare two vintages from the Megalomaniacs in Niagara.
Wakefield Cabernet Sauvignon, Clare Valley Australia 2007 $19.95

Inspired by the wines of Mouton Rothschild, the Taylor family set out to make world class wines back in the 70’s. Now they’re such a humble bunch that they would never say that they have hit Mouton heights but the wines are first and foremost delicious, generous and very popular. This Cabernet offers up benchmark Cab. Sauv. flavours that punch well above their weight.

Coriole Redstone Shiraz, Mclaren Vale Australia 2007 $20.00

The crew at Coriole winery are a busy bunch. When they’re not producing top class extra virgin olive oil or artisanal cheeses they get around to making some of Mclaren Vale’s best Shiraz. The Redstone is their ‘House Wine’; it offers up the kind of flavours you’d expect to find in a wine twice the price. Lots of white pepper, balsamic notes and savoury herbs. Quite the opposite of a lot of generic jammy wines coming out of Australia.

Velenosi Brecciarolo, Montepulciano / Sangiovese, Marche Italy 2006 $17.95

Our restaurant clientele like to keep this wine mostly to themselves. Velenosi winery is a darling amongst the city’s sommeliers. At a wine show you’ll see their booth surrounded by top sommeliers and wine writers. The Brecciarolo is their everyday offering but it shows off the winery's pedigree with clean aromas of black fruit, bark spice and sweet tannins.
