The Good Juice – On Vintages - November 11, 2017

Wine to Look for at the LCBO This Weekend! - COMING TO VINTAGES!

We have eleven new wines releasing at the LCBO this weekend:

Dandelion Vineyards Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz 2015, 1500ml shows lifted blue fruits, blood plum, ripe blackberries and Christmas pudding-like spice that flow out of the glass with spicy pepper, and hints of bramble and dark chocolate. Generous mouth filling sweet blackberry, raspberry and plums cover the palate with lashings of sweet spice. Firm, but fine tannins and dark chocolaty nuances continue throughout the lengthy palate with a youthful finish.

Jean-Luc Columbo Les Collines de Laure IGP Mediterranean 2015 has a bright yellow colour with green highlights. The nose is delicate, with hints of fennel, white peach and pear. The palate is fresh and structured, nicely rounded, with a surprising long finish.

Donatien Bahuaud Les Grand Mortiers 2016 has a pale yellow colour with green hues. The nose is fruity of green apple and pears. It is well-balanced with a delicious sweetness, aromas of pears honey and citrus. A lively, refreshing and mouth-watering finish on mineral and green apple notes.

Domaine Famille Picard Montrachet Blanc St-Aubin 1er Cru 2014 is pale green gold colour with brilliant tints. It has a floral nose with hawthorn and honeysuckle aromas which give away green lemon aromas. Slightly oaked wine with discreet vanilla notes finishing the bouquet. Mouth is balanced, pure, straight and salty on attack. It has a clear and precise mouth which gives sensation of purity. Long finish in mouth. Shows lots of character.

The Mazzei, proprietors of Castello di Fonterutoli since 1435, celebrate their notable ancestor Ser Lapo, with this outstanding Chianti Classico. The Mazzei Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 shows an aroma of fresh berries. It is a wine with a strong structure, and intense taste.

Distinctly Marlborough, the Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2016 exudes vibrant ripe citrus notes, crunchy greens and hints of tropical guava on the nose. The palate is refined and elegant with superb natural fruit weight providing a juicy core of layered fruit, entwined with a salty textural acidity, vibrant citrus pith and a moreish dry chalky finish.

The opening aromas of the Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Brut Cava are yeasty from aging on its lees, smoky, with hints of brioche, followed by touches of honey, fruit and flower petals. The palate is excellent, fruity and full of flavour, but very elegant and luxurious, giving the drinker a delightful sense of abundance.

Bodegas Altanza Hacienda Valvares 2012 has a very modern personality, it is complex with aromatic features very sweet and complex. It leaves memories to the toast of the barrels in which it was aged, spiced, smoked, coffee, cocoa, chocolates and sweets in general tannins. Its fruits are sweet memories, finding cherries, figs and a bit of licorice. It is characterized by the sweetness and pleasant feelings, we find the same as in the nose but more intense. It is remarkable the intensity of the soft, sweet French oak, which leaves a very strong but nice aftertaste.

J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cab. Sauv. 2015, 1500ml is dark in color with a bright hue. Layered aromas of cassis and black cherry are accented by an authentic barrel bouquet of hazelnut, cocoa, and toasted pastry. Sturdy tannins strike the palate and finish with the high-toned fruit signature that typifies the Paso Robles growing region.

Havens Chardonnay Carneros Napa Valley 2015 has notes of lemon, pastry, white flowers and spices that come together nicely, as this vivid wine shows off its considerable personality. The rich, lush fruit flavors are balanced by mouth-watering acidity, and the complex tannins from barrel fermentation lead to a very satisfying finish.

Renwood Winery Premier Old Vine Zonfandel 2014 is bright and highly aromatic with notes of blackberry, cocoa powder and cola nut. Loaded with flavours of strawberry, chocolate, anise and smoked meat, the layered complexity of this wine is complimented by its excellent weight and balance, making it a signature Old Vine Zinfandel. Fresh and refined, the plush tannins are flawlessly integrated to add a silky, regal quality to the velvety finish. A perfect wine for every day or an elegant pairing to any meal.

James Suckling, July 17, 2017

“This is very decadent and rich with blackberry, spice, meat and earth character. Full body, dense and juicy yet always refined and fresh. Classy. Needs a year or two to soften. Screw cap.”

Jean-Luc Columbo Les Collines de Laure IGP Mediterranean 2015 +512533 $19.95

Vic Harradine,, November 6, 2017

"The predominant grape in this white blend is Rolle-better known as Vermentino. It opens with subdued aromas of savory local herbs, citrus and floral notes. There's quite a bundle of balanced and beautiful flavours that bathe palate with green fruit-apple, pear and racy lime-intertwined with nectarine and mineral notes. It finishes dry, crisp and mouth-watering good. Give this a go with lemon sole or pan-seared tilapia."
Donatien Bahuaud Les Grand Mortiers 2016 +140889 $19.95

Rated 88
Michael Godel, Wine Align, November 1, 2017

“There is the classic washed cheese rind note and some fresh chèvre in ting-yang combination but what’s most appreciated is the added balance of acidity and also a classic, honeyed note. This is a gregarious chenin blanc, waxy, textured and lovely to drink. Drink 2017-2019.”
Domaine Famille Picard Montrachet Blanc St-Aubin 1er Cru 2014 +522078 $57.95

Rated 94 & 3 Star Value Rating
John Szabo, WineAlign, November 1, 2017

“Fans of white Burgundy won’t want to miss this wine, easily at the level of 1er crus from more famous villages like Meursault or Puligny, without the price tag. The nose is gorgeous, full of stony-flinty minerality, cool fruit and plenty of lemon-lime and key lime pie character, while the palate is fullish, firm, well-structured with excellent length. Clearly made from a superior piece of land, treated appropriately in the cellar. Best 2017-2026.”

Mazzei Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 +288530 $22.95

Rated 92
Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, December 31, 2016

“The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is an excellent wine with gorgeous smoothness and soft tannins. This 90/10 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot shows the best of both grapes in their respective percentages. Production numbers are large - at 100,000 bottles - so you should have no problem locating this easy-to-drink and affordable red wine from beautiful Tuscany. Ser Lapo is dedicated to the Mazzei family ancestor who first mentioned a "Chianti" wine in the distant year of 1398.”
Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2016 +919514 $19.95

Rated 89
MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator, August 31, 2017

“Pear and citrus flavors are juicy and bright, with terrific intensity and aromatic accents of peach blossom lingering on the finish. Drink now.”
Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Brut Cava +558825 $32.95

Rated 90 & 2/12 Stars (out of 3) Value Rating
John Szabo, WineAlign, October 2017

“Fleshy, flavourful and attractively toasty, this is another fine bottling of Segura Viudas' premium Cava offering. There's plenty of yeasty autolysis, fresh bread dough and blanched almonds over green apple and citrus fruit. Fine mousse, and persistence, too. Tasted October 2017.”
Bodegas Altanza Hacienda Valvares 2012 +423509 $18.95

Rated 92
Josh Raynolds, Vinous, October 2015

“Dark ruby. Heady, exotically perfumed red berry liqueur, floral pastille and incense aromas are lifted by bright mineral and spice notes. Silky, sweet and broad on the palate, offering nicely concentrated raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a jolt of vanilla. Supple tannins give shape to the very long, fruit-driven finish, which shows lingering smoke and allspice notes. This wine was aged for a year in new French oak barrels followed by six more months of rest in large oak vats, also French."
J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cab. Sauv. 2015, 1500ml +16915 $46.95

Rated 88
James Laube, Wine Spectator, 2017

“Notable for its zesty, spicy, dill- and mocha-scented oak, this is intriguing for the wood alone, with a firm mix of extracted dark berry, gravel and herb notes. Drink now through 2025.”
Havens Chardonnay Carneros Napa Valley 2015 +454587 $24.95

Rated 92
Vic Harradine,, November 6, 2017

"Baking spice and smoky/oaky aromas usher in a medium-full bodied, generously textured chardonnay of irresistible charm. A gorgeous rush of sweet-tinged fruit-peach, pear and apple-blanket the palate intertwined with caramel and citrus tang. The lingering, delectable finish and aftertaste come up flavourful with oodles of fruit and tang."
Renwood Winery Premier Old Vine Zinfandel 2014 +450510 $26.95

Rated 90
Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast, May 1 ,2017

“Subtle oak shadings add welcome complexity to this medium-bodied, well-balanced and delicious wine. It has hints of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon, ripe blackberry fruit and maple-like sweetness, but firm tannins keep it appetizing.”
