The Good Juice – On Vintages - November 25, 2017

Wine to Look for at the LCBO This Weekend! - COMING TO VINTAGES!

We have nine new wines releasing at the LCBO this weekend:

Susana Balbo Crios Malbec 2015 is a beautiful reddish-purple colour. It presents aromas and flavours of crushed blueberries, cherries and blackberries with accents of dark spice. Medium bodied with a very subtle and chalky texture.

Susana Balbo BenMarco Expresivo 2015 is a wine with aromas of blackberry, peppercorn tree, violet, mineral notes, balanced natural acidity and firm fine-grained tannins. The body is full, with ultra-fine tannins and a superb finish.

At release, the Wakefield Jaraman Shiraz 2015 has a deep, rich crimson colour with a vibrant purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of red berry and cherry fruit along with subtle black olive and spice. It is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of ripe red berry fruit, violets and attractive oak characters of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated tannins providing the palate with an intense, persistent length.

Chateau de Laubade Bas Armagnac XO Diamant in Gift Box 700ml is a rich and shining amber colour. The nose is uniquely intense and develops fine aromas of orange peel, roasted and grilled bread, completed by notes of cinnamon. Savoury roundness and seductive complexity in the mouth, showing fineness, femininity and elegance. A finish of up to 15 minutes.

Fazio Aegades Grillo Erice 2015 is a yellow straw colour with gold reflections. It has a characteristic bouquet of Grillo, with marked notes of mature exotic fruit. The taste is harmonius, full, and persistent, recalling the fragrance of mature exotic fruit.

Mostly Sangiovese grapes, the Grevepesa Castelgreve Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 greets the eye with a very intense ruby red colour. It opens with a complex and elegant bouquet, with nuances of mature fruits and vanilla. Soft on the palate, and well balanced with a persistent aftertaste.

Grevepesa Clemente VII Chianti Classico 2014, 1500ml is an intense ruby red coloured wine with a strong wild berry flavour. It is well integrated with a hint of spices and toasted vanilla. The taste profile is a perfect harmony with sweet tannins that makes it velvety and well balanced.

Bodegas Altanza Club Lealtanza Reserva 2009 presents notes of cherry, licorice and black berries at first, blending well with the balsamic, toasty notes from the oak, which lead to more complex ones of tobacco leaves, leather, pepper and clove. The bouquet is powerful. In the mouth it is fleshy and elegant, smooth and velvety with very good acidity and structure. Black fruits, licorice and spices blend well in the mouth, leaving a long, pleasant aftertaste.

The high fraction of Petit Verdot in the J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 has produced a wine expressing chocolate and blue fruit aromas, with graphite and violet. Highlights of hazelnut and toasted croissant complement the structured and intense plum on the palate. A great example of a great vintage that is sure to show exceptional ageability.

Susana Balbo Crios Malbec 2015 +162529 $14.95

Rated 90
James Suckling, May 23, 2017

“A juicy and fruity red with plum, berry and savory character. Medium body, fresh finish. Well done for a 2015. Drink now.”

Susan Balbo BenMarco Expresivo 2015 +263517 $39.95

Rated 93
Tim Atkin, Argentina Report, 2017

“Expresivo has contained some Cabernet Sauvignon in the past, but is now a bland of 83% Malbec and 17% Cabernet Franc. The result is a focused, almost chiseled wine with lots of limestone freshness, fine tannins and a floral, nuanced finish.”
Wakefield Jaraman Shiraz 2015 +377036 $24.95

Rated 95
James Halliday, July 1, 2017

“Deep crimson-purple; all the synergy hoped for by the winemaker has been achieved. This is as complex as it is full-bodied, with an inky black fruit bouquet, the palate filled to overflowing with black fruits, spice, licorice and dark chocolate all contributing. Has the X-factor, especially if it is given 10+ years in the bottle. Great value too.”
Chateau de Laubade Bas Armagnac XO Diamant in Gift Box 700ml +55830 $99.95

Rated 93
Kara Newman, Wine Enthusiast, December 31, 2012

“The rich topaz color nods to the smooth fruit-and-honey character of this Armagnac. A blend of Baco, Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes yields aromas of butterscotch and fresh apricots, with ethereally light, fruity notes on the palate that are reminiscent of some honeyed Speyside Scotches.”

Fazio Aegades Grillo Eric 2015 +388637 $17.95

Rated 90+
Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, August 30, 2016

“This is a classy value wine from the Erice area of southwestern Sicily. The 2015 Erice Grillo Aegades exhibits a brilliant and luminous appearance. The bouquet is pristine and well defined with tropical tones, citrus, passion fruit and peach. The fruit is crisp and well delineated. The mouthfeel follows suit thanks to the fresh acidity. This is a very nice vinous creation.”
Grevepesa Castelgreve Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 +344416 $21.95

Rated 92
Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, December 15, 2016

“Aromas and flavors of black cherry and black currant are pure and expressive as this smooth red unfolds on the palate. Spice, earth and tar notes add depth, while the finish lingers with tobacco and tea accents. Drink now through 2024.”
Grevepesa Clemente VII Chianti Classico 2014, 1500ml +515171 $44.95

James Suckling, August 21, 2016

Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2014

“Inky ruby. Intense aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, with sexy oak spice and mocha elements. Sweet, broad and plush, with ripe dark fruit flavors showing impressive power and depth and an almost liqueur-like quality. Smooth and seamless in texture, finishing on a sweet, sappy note of cassis, with round, harmonious tannins adding shape.”
J. Lohr Carol’s vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 +246918 $88.95

Rated 92
Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast, February 2, 2017

“There is a healthy dose of 22% Petit Verdot in this bold, juicy wine, rich in wild raspberry and cassis aromas and flavors. Graphite and chocolate fill out the dense, integrated midpalate, complemented by tangy acidity that provides structure and a hint of grace.”
