The Good Juice – On Vintages - March 3, 2018

Wine to Look for at the LCBO This Weekend! - COMING TO VINTAGES!

We have five new red wines releasing at the LCBO this weekend:

On the nose the Susana Balbo Barrel Fermented Torrontes 2016 seduces because of its hints of white pear, white flowers and ripe peach. On the palate, it has beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavours. Plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavours. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry

At release, the 2014 Wakefield Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep crimson red colour to the centre with a vibrant purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of red berry and cherry fruit along with subtle black olive and spice. This is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of ripe red berry fruits, violets and attractive oak characters of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated tannins providing the palate with an intense, persistent length.

The 2015 vintage of Montes Alpha Pinot Noir presents an impressive bright and vibrant ruby-red color. The aromas are highly complex and elegant with a predominance of fresh blue and red berries as well as blackcurrant, licorice, and violets over a backdrop that recalls the forest after a spring rain. Its time in the barrel lends subtle tobacco and vanilla notes plus a clear echo of caramel in perfect harmony with the fruit. The palate is balanced and smooth with medium volume and sensational length, which further accentuates its fruity and floral aromas.

Vicente Faria Gloria Riserva 2015 is the perfect blend of three highly selected Portuguese grape varieties, creating a majestic wine that offers a lot more than expected. We have deep rich fruit, which is met by round tannins, enough to give the wine a strong presence, yet remaining very easy drinking. The wine is balanced with auspicious flavors that are full of fruit, gentle spice and smooth tannins. An elegant wine by all measures.

Bodegas Atteca Vines DO 2015 is an expressive red that is full of rich Morello cherry and plum flavours which are accented by mint, orange peel and sassafras notes. The wine has soft tannins, juicy acidity and a smoky finish.

Susana Balbo Barrel Fermented Torrontes 2016 +384339 $19.95

Rated 93
Luis Guitierrez, Wine Advocate, December 30, 2016

“I also tasted the very young 2016 Susana Balbo Signature Torrontés Barrel Fermented that showed bay leaf and fennel aromas, with notes that made me think of a Sauvignon Blanc. This is also produced from the same vineyard in Altamira and achieved even lower alcohol, higher acidity and a pH of around 3.15. It fermented in second use oak barrels, yet the oak is absolutely impossible to detect. This has the profile of a white from the Loire.”
Wakefield Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 +142398 $24.95

Natalie MacLean, October 14, 2017

“Minty coolness on the nose of this gorgeous Australian red wine is flooded by fleshy blackberry richness on the palate. A hedonist's wine to fill the senses. Full-bodied and smooth Cabernet Sauvignon. Finishes with dried herbs, tobacco leaves and cedar brush. Very satisfying, especially at this price. Pair with ribeye steak.”

Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2015 +143214 $19.95

Rated 91
James Suckling, May 29, 2017

“A tangy and fresh wine with dried strawberry and hints of smoke. Medium to full body, round tannins and a fresh finish. A pretty pinot with plenty of texture and flavor. Drink now.”
Vicente Faria Gloria Riserva 2015 +146522 $16.95

Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2017

“Vicente Faria delivers a densely ripe wine made from selected vineyards. Wood aged, with rich black, tarry fruit and dark chocolate aromas, it's an impressive blend that will need to age. Drink from 2019."
Bodegas Ateca Atteca Old Vines DO 2015 +103473 $24.95

Rated 90
James Suckling, July 24, 2017

“Rich, old vine garnacha ripened all the way to the limit. Poached raspberry and boysenberry fruits throughout, all framed in languid, mellow tannins. Drink now."
