The Good Juice – On Vintages - May 12, 2018

Wine to Look for at the LCBO This Weekend! - COMING TO VINTAGES!

We have seven new wines releasing at the LCBO this weekend:

The 2016 Wakefield Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep red with a vibrant purple hue. The wine has an aroma of rich blackcurrant, subtle spice, tomato leaf and a touch of eucalypt. French oak maturation is also evident with subtle aromas of cedar and dark chocolate. This is a wine of great intensity. It has distinctive blackcurrant and cassis fruit flavours. Subtle oak characters of cedar cigar box and spice are also evident. The tannins are fine and elegant – a hallmark of the varietal. The palate is well balanced, complex and fulfilling and lingers on the finish.

The 2016 Dandelion Damsel of the Barossa Merlot has an intense crimson colour with youthful purple hues. Lifted, elegant notes of blue fruits, blood and of course damson plums with a dash of Christmas pudding-like spice. All accented by hints of bramble and dark chocolate. Lush, mouth filling sweet blackberry and plums elegantly cover the palate with nuances of sweet spice. Silky, fine tannins and dark chocolaty notes tickle throughout the lengthy palate with youthful and pretty finish.

Montes Purple Angel 2015 is an impressive deep purplish-red colour. The nose presents elegance with outstanding ripe red and black berries over a backdrop of sweet spices. Dark chocolate and mocha notes from aging in French oak combine very well with the variety’s characteristic fruity aromas, resulting in a wine with tremendous aromatic complexity that continues to open with layer after layer of new and delicious sensations. The palate is well structured with soft, ample tannins. Acidity from the Petit Verdot lends juiciness and central nerve, qualities that predict excellent evolution and exceptional aging potential. The remarkable finish is elegant and very much in accordance with the nose. This is clearly an ideal wine to enjoy now—or in years to come.

Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico II Picchio Gran Selezione 2013 has an intense ruby red colour, with floral and chocolate aromas with elegant herbal notes. Remarkable body with lots of character and a long persistent final.

Wither Hills Rarangi Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is bone dry to accentuate the mineral purity of this unique vineyard its “turangawaewae”, its sense of place. Minerality, sea salt and lime are the back bone to this wine. Rarangi presents fresh vibrant aromatics of citrus, lemongrass, guava and subtle cilantro characters. The palate shows purity of fruit and a dedication to texture and crunchy acidity, true to site, with a ripe phenolic spine. A Sauvignon Blanc well suited to a variety of foods.

Wither Hills Rose of Pinot Noir 2017 is fresh watermelon pink in colour with an enticing subtle crushed ice blue hue, this Rosé of Pinot Noir is refreshing in style with perfumed aromas of rose petals, wild strawberries, fresh raspberries, and white peaches. The palate is elegant, reminiscent of summer berries, with a delightful creamy texture and superb length balanced nicely with bright acidity. This dry style of Rosé is a perfect accompaniment to beautiful summer days.

The 2015 J. Lohr October Night Chardonnay 2015 has a bright, youthful straw yellow colour, and floral aromas with lemon curd, beeswax, and toasty vanilla. The winemaking techniques, used to enhance the spicy and exotic nature of this Chardonnay, included barrel fermentation in largely one-year-old French oak barrels in the coldest corner of our barrel room, followed by malolactic fermentation with lees stirring. This all contributed to a very attractive and complex bouquet with a soft, rich and seamless texture.

“Deep purple color. Fruity aromas and flavors of cassis pie, roasted pepper relish, pencil shavings, and chocolate with a supple, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and an amusing, medium-long boysenberries, cedar bark, and dried eucalyptus finish with fine, dusty tannins and no oak. A rich, herbal cabernet for rich, spicy meals or a nice rest in the cellar.”

David Lawrason, WineAlign, May 3, 2018

“This has a lovely, engaging, soft plummy/berry merlot nose, with subtle vanilla, licorice notes. It is quite full bodied, smooth and easy on the tannin and alcohol. Quite delicious without going into excessive sweetness. Some acid firmness holds it together. The length is very good. Fine example of New World merlot.”

James Suckling, March 16, 2018

“This is perhaps the greatest Purple Angel ever. Full body, tight and compressed with an amazing texture and density. Fantastic fine tannins that are silky and polished. I love the energy and intensity. A blend of 92% carmenere and 8% petit verdot. One for the cellar but I can't wait to drink it again.”

Natalie MacLean, May 12, 2018

“One of my favourite New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs year after year! It's herbal but not too grassy with a lovely lime lift through the mid-palate and finish. Crisp and refreshing. The grapes for this zesty white wine come from Rarangi, Benmorven and Taylor River regions. Minerality, umami, old foreshore, sea salt and lime aromas. This would be perfect with seafood and light-hearted conversation.”
Wither Hills Rose of Pinot Noir 2017 +552992 $18.95

Vintages Panel, October 2017

“Wither Hills, who celebrated their first vintage in 1994, was named for the range that abuts their vineyards. The Pinot Noir for this rosé was sourced from sites in the Wairau Valley, one of the three subregions of Marlborough. This is summer in a glass, with pretty red fruit, cherry and strawberry particularly. Fresh and long with a soft, smooth texture. A great warmweather sipper, it has plenty of bright food-friendly acidity and will easily pair with a wide range of foods.”
J. Lohr October Night Chardonnay 2015 +225375 $34.95

Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2017

“Rich honeysuckle, marzipan and oak aromas meet bright lemongrass on the nose of this bottling, showing both the fresh and oxidative sides of the grape. Smoked chicken and brioche notes are prominent on the palate, leading to a tangy, botanical, juniper-laced finish.”
