The Winery
Established in 1970, Brokenwood Wines has evolved from a weekend venture for self-professed hobby winemakers into one of Australia’s most reputable wine labels.
Brokenwood was founded by a trio of Sydney-based solicitors; Tony Albert, John Beeston and James Halliday. The first vintage was picked in 1973 and while none of the original partners claimed to know anything about viticulture, the wine received praise, and attracted a loyal following from its first vintage. In 1975, a new winery was built to accommodate increased production supporting steady growth until the boom of 1978, when six new partners joined, allowing the purchase of the “Graveyard Vineyard”. The Graveyard Vineyard created Brokenwood’s flagship wine, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, which is still sourced exclusively from this one vineyard.
Since the early 80’s the winery has been passionate about exploring new premium regions to produce single vineyard wines, as each vintage allows, ensuring that quality will never be compromised. While the size of the company has grown, the operation remains deliberately labour intensive, being the only way of assuring the individuality of the wines. The Single Vineyard Selection typifies Brokenwood's focus on excellence and their passion for making great wine.

The "Good Juice" Wine of the Week
Brokenwood Wines, 2004 Shiraz, Rayner Vineyard
McLaren Vale Australia - 91 Points Robert Parker
$53.95/bottle + GST available in 6 pks Stelvin enclosure.
Maturation for this wine was in predominantly American oak and the distinctive vanillin lift compliments the ripe dark berry and mocha chocolate aromas. Possessing a full bodied mouthfeel, the wine has good flavours of plum, vanillin with charry notes and an excellent finish. Although the wine can be consumed now, it will develop a into rich, chocolate/earth McLaren Vale mature red.
Here is what Robert Parker had to say about the wine…This blockbuster, dense purple-hued Shiraz exhibits aromas of mocha, chocolate, sweet berry fruit, blackberries and earth. Rich chewy, full-bodied, ripe and well balanced this beauty can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years. 91 Points, Robert Parker – Wine Advocate (December 2006).
The Food and Wine Match
We have talked about Shiraz in the past and mentioned at that time that the wine is an ideal partner for robust hearty foods. The voluptuous flavours of Shiraz which often include stone fruits and currants with hints of smoke, tar and licorice make for intriguing pairing opportunities with meat, game and other full flavoured dishes. Try the Rayner with Rack of Lamb marinated and crusted with Dijon Mustard, fresh herbs and crushed cashews.
