The Winery

The Winery of Good Hope is one of a group of wineries that collectively represent “ The Winery “. The Winery's distinctive brands reflect entirely separate styles. Each focused and yet diverse. Each brand has its own raison d'être, independent of the others, though complimentary to the bigger picture. Together they provide a variety of options through an extended spectrum of varieties, price points, unique packaging and characterful wines. There are wines originating from the most established vineyards of the Cape and wines from the most over-looked or undiscovered sites, the exciting cutting-edge micro-climates from previously ignored locations across the Cape.

Across everything it creates, The Winery aims to consistently provide its followers with quality and value, while combining a pursuit of innovation with a healthy respect for tradition. The personalities and characters that make up The Winery are evident in each of the different wines. And as so often in such circumstances, the sum of the parts is so much greater than the ability of the individual.

The "Good Juice" Wine of the Week

The Winery of Good Hope, 2006 Chenin Blanc,
Stellenbosch, South Africa | $13.95/btl. + GST, 12 btls. /case

The vineyards for this wine are predominantly old, bush vines in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, which is located in the Western Cape. Relatively low-yielding vines, 2006 was truly a wonderful vintage, with spells of intense heat and prolonged coolness just about the exact times each was required. Rainfall was excellent and evenings were cooler than usual allowing the grapes to be harvested later in the season with better natural acidities. Separate parcels were picked individually at varying ripeness, in order to build good complexity of acidity, fruit, depth and minerality. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks with neutral yeast which favours fruit enhancement.

Chenin is an extremely versatile grape, able to make excellent wines in many different guises, from Late Harvest to Straw wine to classic dry and off-dry styles and even Méthode Champenoise. This example is a wonderfully lively, fruity and beautifully balanced dry Chenin Blanc. With flavours of pears, currents and flint there is plenty of leesy mouthfeel, whilst finishing with a refreshing mineral length. A true noble varietal, Chenin deserves to be taken seriously, even for everyday drinking wines such as this.

The Food and Wine Match
Dry, lighter-bodied white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chenin Blanc work well with foods that are aromatic, higher in acidity and spicier than most. These wines are often paired with appetizers and first courses since they can set the stage for fuller bodied whites and reds that often follow. You may wish to serve the Good Hope, 2006 Chenin Blanc with a Risotto of Lemon Shrimp, Garlic and Goat Cheese and or Grilled Sea Bass with Mango-Roasted Red Pepper Relish.
