The Winery

The Australian wine-growing region known as the Clare Valley is situated 137 km due north of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. It was named by Irish settlers for its great beauty and its resemblance to the lovely green County Clare in Ireland. The Taylor family vineyard and winery is one of the first that visitors encounter as they enter the valley from Adelaide. Some of the vineyards are quite elevated – the Taylor family vineyard is located 350 meters above sea level – and although the general climate could be described as Mediterranean, each small area is subject to its own micro-climate. Many wines from the Clare Valley exhibit distinct cool climate characteristics and intense varietal fruit flavours. Winemakers have been attracted to the valley since as early as 1840 and today the valley is considered an exciting area for premium wine production. Along with Alsace in France and Mosel in Germany, the Clare Valley is recognized as one of the top Riesling producers in the world. The climate and soil combination also produce premium examples of the ‘noble’ Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz- the quintessential Australian red variety.

The "Good Juice" Wine of the Week

Wakefield, 2005 Shiraz Clare Valley, Australia
$18.95/btl + GST, 12 btls /case

This is the 33rd vintage of Taylors Shiraz from the family estate in the Clare Valley. Conditions were dry from October 2004 until the end of February 2005. The fruit ripening patterns were unusual which made for a hectic vintage - everything seemed to become ripe at once. The Shiraz fruit was intensely flavoured though and the resultant wine is vibrant and rich. The 2005 vintage is a full bodied wine; it has rich blackberry fruit and spice evident throughout the palate. Ground coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and cedar characters combine well with the primary fruit characters, to create a complex flavour profile. The wine has good balance and excellent length.

The Food and Wine Match
The full body and weight of Shiraz makes this wine an ideal partner for robust hearty foods. This wine will work particularly well with full flavoured grilled meats and game. So…there is a meat shop on Bayview Avenue that does a marinated veal chop that would be a perfect match. No vegetables, no starch, just the wine and the veal chop. Heaven on Earth!
