Founded over 20 years ago, Columbia Crest is one of Washington State’s premier wine producers beginning in 1978 when grapes were planted in eastern Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills along the Columbia River. The appellation straddles the 46th (north) parallel—the same latitude as central France. Not surprisingly, the major Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) do well in the Columbia Valley.

Ray Einberger, who became Head Winemaker in 2002, joined Columbia Crest in 1993 and worked to establish the winery’s acclaimed Reserve program, which under his leadership has received consistently high scores and blossomed to a 20,000 case annual production. The cellar operations for the Reserve wines were modeled, in part, on Einberger’s experience as Maître de Chai for Napa Valley’s Opus One from 1991 to 1993.
