Maison Pierre Sparr Successeurs www.vins-sparr.com
Located in the heart of the Alsace vineyards, in Sigolsheim, northwest of Colmar, the magnificent Estate Pierre Sparr owns 34 hectares (75 acres), including 3 outstanding Grands Crus, but grapes are also purchased from an additional 150 hectares (330 acres), under a strict quality control regime with other growers. The winery has acquired a worldwide reputation due mostly to a strong identity and style. Domaine Pierre Sparr's wines are known for being fruit forward, well bodied, complex, well balanced and elegant.
"Bernard Sparr, the 9th generation of Alsatian winemakers of the house of Pierre Sparr, has made a serious Canadian connection. On the road hawking his stellar wines, he met a wonderful woman from Ottawa and married her. And now, after living at various locations in Canada and the US from 1999 to 2001, the 39-year-old Bernard and Denise have moved to the ancient town of Sigolsheim, where the winery has operated in the same family since 1680. The glorious white wines of Pierre Sparr are on more solid ground. Sales have shot up 36 per cent over the last year in Canada and in the US. Alsace is a growing niche now because people have a better understanding of how the wines go so beautifully with food."
