The little village of Castagnoli has existed since the Early Middle Ages. The first reliable documentation regarding the Rocca di Castagnoli estate dates as far back as the year 900 AD and concerns the sale of a holding called Stielle, which today is one the best known vineyards on the Estate. The Rocca, an imposing stronghold that towers above the village, dates back to at least the 11th Century and is the subject of great architectural interest.
In 1203, Castagnoli was incorporated into the territory of Florence and became part of the League of Chianti under the municipality of Gaiole. In the 1700's, under the management of the Templi family, it became one of the most celebrated estates in the area. Much has changed since then: the estate has undergone extensive renovations since 1982 and modern winemaking practices have recently been introduced in the vineyards and cellars.
Today, the Estate produces, under the watchful eye of winemaker Maurizio Alongi, roughly 200,000 bottles per year of premium wines from the 90 hectares of vineyards belonging to the property.
