When they scouted vineyards for their Justice series back in 2003, only the very greatest plots would do. Andy Beckstoffer’s Dr. Crane and To Kalon vineyards are two of the most purely alluvial vineyard sites in their valley, making them true Napa Valley Grand Crus. To Kalon is the reason why Robert Mondavi’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has the record that is has, and why Mondavi decided to plant Opus One across the street. They knew they had to capture some of this magic for themselves.
It isn’t just hype or fashion that causes wines from these vineyards to receive legions of 100-point scores every year; it’s the fact that these are simply magic vineyards, ones that have helped elevate brands like Schrader, Carter Cellars, Paul Hobbs, Realm, and Myriad to superstar status.
